Reflections Words of Great Thinkers

Before the Beginning

There is a reality even prior to Heaven & Earth

Indeed it has no form, much less a name

Eyes fail to see it; it has no voice for ears to detect

To call it Mind or God or Buddha or any other name violets its nature

For it then becomes like a visionary flower in the air

It is not Mind or any other name

It is absolutely quiet and yet illuminating in a mysterious way

It allows itself to be perceived only to those who have a clear and open mind.

Before the world was and the sky was filled with stars

There was a strange unfathomable body

This body, this being is silent and beyond all substance and sensing

It stretches beyond everything spanning the empyrean

It has always been here and always will be

Everything comes from it and then it is the mother of everything

I do not know its name, so I call it TAO

The body of the Tao is a mist beyond your eyes, Tao of NO body

Yet within it is all creation

Like a seed in the dark and a dim light, and from this light comes everything.

Cosmic Design What is Life

There have been many quotes in philosophy by many different people and many have the same theme running through them. But what is life, life is many things to many people depending how their life is created and how they create their own life within a structure of where they live, their culture and their way of living. But what is it that gives us life?

Life is a molecule of carbon dioxide that crosses a cell boundary into a leaf does not suddenly come alive, nor does a molecule of oxygen suddenly die when it is released to the atmosphere. Rather life itself has to be regarded as belonging in some sense to a totality which includes everything on the planet.

Life is that a property of matter whereby it can remember, matter which can remember is living. Matter which cannot remember is dead.

Who Am I

Most of the cells in my body are free living micro-organisms cooperating with me to digest my food and keep me healthy.

Mitochondria power every cell in my body, but they are much closely related to me than to each other and to the free living bacteria out under the hill. They feel like strangers, but the thought comes that the same creatures precisely the same are out there in the cells of seagulls and whales and dune grass and seaweed and further inland in the leaves of the Beech tree, it is through all these forms that we are connected, so we all have close relatives once removed all over the place.

Who Are We

The evolutionary tree of life is usually shown with humanity on the tallest branch. We see ourselves at the pinnacle of evolution the highest stage yet reached. Often we see ourselves as the end point no longer subject to evolutionary change, but how justified are these images?

Survival and reproduction are the hall marks of evolutionary success , the origin of our species goes back no more  than a few million years, but bacteria emerged soon after the formation of the earth over 3 billion years ago. Some have changed little over time and disease causing bacteria have survived everything our modern technology has thrown at them and are poised for a comeback. So are bacteria the true lords of evolution

We pride ourselves on our uniqueness on our difference from the lower orders of life and yet every attempt to define that difference has ultimately failed. Whales have equally complex brains and many use tools; some apes and monkeys use rudimentary language and abstract thought, also many have social structures. Chimpanzees share 99% of our genes, so in what respect can we claim to be at the pinnacle of evolution?

Our technologies far surpass the tools of other species enabling us to expand our habits to all corners of the globe, but we are genetically far less adaptable than bacteria. If we destroy the life support systems of the planet on which we depend we will become extinct. Bacteria and cockroaches will inherit the earth, so who is superior

We can now modify our own genes at will and are taking control of our own evolutionary destiny, but do we have the wisdom to choose where we should go? Can we be sure we won’t turn the present planetary plaque of humanity into a galactic disaster or that we won’t simply exterminate the miraculous experiment that is humanity.

Can we be sure that nature won’t bypass us as an evolutionary dead end. Perhaps we are already sowing the seeds of our own destruction by creating the first forms of silicon based life in our electronic technologies

Perhaps the truth is that we are inescapable part of the interactive co-evolving whole that is Earth. Perhaps whatever we do to ourselves we do to the whole and whatever we do to the whole we do to ourselves. Perhaps our destiny is inseparable from the destiny of the planet which spawned us.

All things are connected like the blood which unites families.

All things are connected whatever befalls the earth, befalls the son’s of earth. Man did not weave the web of life; he is merely a strand of it. Whatever he does to the web he does to himself.

The Earth does not need to change in order to survive; she will survive with or without us. If we are to continue it is our values that need to change.

A Meditation of Inner Peace

The secret of mediation is the breathing, the ebb and flow of the breath by inhaling deeply then exhaling more slowly, breathe from deep within the navel area and not from the chest area in which many of us do on a day to day breathing as these breaths are shallow and not deep as in meditation

Think of the breath, not simply as the air coming in and out of the lungs, but as the entire energy flow that courses through the body with each in-and-out breath. Be sensitive to the texture of that energy flow. You may find that the body changes after a while and another rhythm or flow will take its place learn to go with each flow of energy that passes through the body.  Learn how to listen and respond to what the body is telling you and what kind of energy it needs. Remember everybody has different forms of energy so by relaxing and concentrating on your breathing allow the various energies to flow through you

If your mind wanders off, gently bring it right back. If it wanders off ten times, a hundred times, bring it back ten times, a hundred times. Don't give in. This quality is called ardency. In other words, as soon as you realise that the mind has slipped away, you can then bring it right back to the present moment

When the breath starts feeling comfortable, you can start exploring it in other areas of the body. If you simply stay with the comfortable breath in a narrow range, you'll tend to doze off. So consciously expand your awareness. A good place to begin is the lower root chakra or base chakra as this is where most of your energy is stored. Then notice how it feels as you breathe in and breathe out.

Watch it for a couple of breaths, and notice if there's any sense of tension or tightness in that part of the body, either with the in-breath or with the out-breath. Think of the tension dissolving away in the sensation of the in-breath and the sensation of the out-breath. If you want, you can think of the breath energy coming into the body right there in the lower chakra working through any tension or tightness that you might feel there. Slowly go up each chakra point to release any unwanted energy that may be sitting there. Once you have got into your own rhythm you can expand your awareness into visualisation.

Walking along a Beach to a Cave of Crystal Light

Imagine within your mind that you are walking on an empty but beautiful beach, feel the sand under your feet as you walk barefoot through the sand. Listen to the waves of the sea and imagine the tide ebbing and flowing just as your breath is ebbing and flowing with the inward and outward breathing experience it as the energy of light filling your body and all the toxic waste leaving the body.

You have now come to the end of the beach where there is a large cave you enter that cave and see the most beautiful colours you have ever seen all around you. The lights of these colours are beautiful and dazzling for the eye to behold. You catch a glimpse of a large red crystal standing on top of a shelf made from the cave’s inner structure and its twinkling light beckons you to it. As you look into this red crystal you see the depths of the root chakra it all depends how bright or how dark this colour comes to you, note the redness or lack of it as by doing so you will get a good idea of how your base chakra is healthy or not so healthy. The deeper the red represents negative unused energies, if the colour is faint then there are negative energies starting to appear. To have healthy chakras they all must bright colours with no darkness or paleness to them.

Imagine you are walking through the cave and in each corner of the cave sits a crystal of all the colours of each chakra from red to violet and then to white light. Do the same with each chakra, look deeply into each of them and see what you feel, what thoughts come to you and which colours seems to be the clearest and then you will know how balanced your chakras are.

When you have finished looking at each crystal you will come to the largest crystal of them all, a pure clear quartz with so many indentations in it that it looks like there is another crystal inside of it, use this crystal as the main generator that will help clean all the chakras in your body. Imagine this cleansing crystal flowing through every part of your body cleansing all the impurities from it. Hold this vision as long as you can, and you will feel lighter and fresher than you did before doing this exercise.

If you have any clear quartz crystals put one in each hand while doing this exercise and you will feel a big difference as the energy from the crystal and the visualisation that you are creating will emphasise the raising of your energy consciousness.

I use crystals in my meditation always clear quartz.
